RIADA HOUSE COMFORT FUND

Riada House Comfort Committee is a group of volunteers who got together during the 1990’s.  Made up of relatives of Residents, Staff members and members of the community. The goal was  to raise much needed funds to provide extra comforts for the residents of Riada House and the Day Care Centre. These are the extras that the HSE do not provide.

Over the years The Comfort Fund have provided :-

Pressure Relieving Mattresses, Special Chairs and Armchairs, A Clavinova Piano, T V Sets, A Sensory Garden, Garden Furniture, Drama Sessions for residents, Art Therapy Classes for residents

And various other items

These items have to be replaced from time to time and so our fundraising efforts are ongoing.

Our  main sources of funding are :- A yearly Flag Day. A number of CD’s launched by local artists and students at Tullamore College. We have also benefited from a number of different concerts held through the years and we also rely on donations from relatives of residents and clients of Riada House,  the Day Care Centre, the general public and various local organisations.

We are very grateful to all those people who have helped our fundraising efforts over the years, to all the volunteers and to the different organisations who have helped keep the Comfort Fund going.

Clonbeale More Peatland Conservation Project.

Tullamore Lions Clubs commenced a Peatland Conservation Project in January 2023.  This project is a collaboration with the Grennan family to conserve approximately 12 hectares of Clonbeale More bog.  Our colleagues in Birr Lions Club joined with us and the family to form the Clonbeale Peatland Conservation Group.  Prof. John is a member of the Group and in 2024 a representative of the newly formed Eglish Drumcullen Development Committee also joined.

The initial aims of phase one of the project can be summarised as:

  • Conservation of the Clonbeale segment of the Greater Killaun peatland complex.
  • Improvement of the hydrological status of the damaged centre of the segment by blocking drains under the control of the owners.

In a second phase of the project it is planned to provide public access to Clonbeale via a ‘Wild Walkway’ through the semi-natural perimeter pinewoods where this is consistent with the overriding aims of biodiversity preservation and maintenance of its carbon sequestration function.  A key objective is the linkage of this proposed Wild Walkway with the adjoining segments of the perimeter route currently in development in collaboration with St Brendan’s Community School Birr, Coillte, the Oxmantown Settlement Trust, Bord na Móna and private owners.

Clonbeale More Peatland Conservation Project: (October 2024 Update).

Raised bogs like Clonbeale More provide excellent spaces for walking and engaging with nature.  They are also important habitats for species, such as the curlew, and are sources of art inspiration.  When they are Intact or restored, raised bogs can provide a water regulation function by capturing excess water in a catchment and releasing it gradually, thus reducing flooding risks. Most importantly, raised bogs in good condition that are actively forming peat, result in significantly less carbon being emitted into the atmosphere
